AUSTRALIAN BASEBALL LEAGUE
The Sydney Blue Sox are the professional baseball team of NSW in the Australian Baseball League.
The Sydney Blue Sox are one of the six foundation teams existing in the Australian Baseball League. Their home ground is at Blacktown International Sportspark (BISP), which is also one of the two venues utilised for the Olympics in 2000.
The League has now expanded to 8 teams including a team from Korea and New Zealand.
CLUB FORMATION
When the Australian Baseball League was announced, it was speculated that there would be ten teams in the competition. However, two months later, the number and locations of the teams were announced with Sydney having one of the five confirmed teams and Canberra successfully attaining the position of the sixth team.
THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME
A competition was organised in December 2009 with the title ‘Name your ABL Team’. Participants were asked to choose from one of the four team names given as options – Sydney Bluewave, Sydney Rocks, Sydney Sting, and Sydney Surf. However, when the final name was announced in August 2010, it was Sydney Blue Sox. Blue, the traditional colour of Sydney was associated with New South Wales sporting teams.
